2017 - present: In Wilmington, Delaware, gun-violence homicide rates are at record highs. Social Contract, a social impact consulting firm, partners with community, corporate, government, and philanthropic
leaders to launch uniquely effective solutions to complex social challenges using collective impact strategies. SummerCollab is focusing on bridging the summer learning gap in education, and Explo Studios is bringing critical-thinking curriculum to high-risk youth.
The founder of Dual School, an employee of Kingswood Community Center, and I hired 20 teens from high-risk neighborhoods to design after-school programming for other teens. Teens don't utilize current programming in Delaware and we thought a big reason was that they had no role in designing it. We gave them complete autonomy whilst facilitating and teaching human-centered design, critical thinking, and problem-solving, and after two months they developed structures for four different programs: recreation, arts, education, and health. These are currently being piloted!
I taught Explo Studio curriculum to high-risk youth in Delaware in the summer of 2018 at Tyler's Camp. I received professional development from Explo Studio and learned how to teach students to think with their minds and hands. Biggest takeaways: a single question can be an incredibly engaging process, and always respond to questions with more questions.
Summer Collab is a collaborative community transforming educational outcomes for underserved students in Delaware by providing access to creative, experiential curriculum. I wrote engaging problem-solving and critical-thinking courses for grade band 4-5.
